Lesson 1
July 5, 2020
*JESUS SEPARATES GOOD PEOPLE FROM BAD PEOPLE*
BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 25:31-46
Matthew 25:31-42 KJV
[31] When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: [32] And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: [33] And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. [34] Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: [35] For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: [36] Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. [37] Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee ? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? [38] When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee ? [39] Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? [40] And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. *MEMORY VERSE:* Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘come, you who are blessed by my Father’ (Matthew 25:34a,NIV)
*TARGET* : To help the child know that when Christ comes, the righteous will be separated from the wicked and unrighteous people.
*OBJECTIVES* :
During and after the lesson, each child will show that he or she understands the lesson by:
1. Choosing whether to be a sheep or a goat when Christ comes and giving reasons for his or her choice.
2. Saying how he or she intends to show love and compassion to the sick and needy within the week.
*OUTLINE* :
1. The separation of the Wicked from the Righteous- verses 31-33
2. The Invitation of the King to the Righteous – verses 34-40
3. The Judgement of the Wicked- verses 41-46
*Introduction*
A little time before His death, Jesus taught many lessons about the kingdom of God. His people needed to know when, where, and how His coming will be and what will happen then.
One of the things Jesus taught was about the future judgement of the people who will be on earth when He comes in His glory to set up His kingdom on earth. This judgement will be at His coming when He will clean off from the earth all that are opposed to Him. All the nations will be called to account before the King of kings. As He sets up His kingdom, He will remove everything that is wrong and evil. He will be just and fair in His rule.
*LESSON COMMENTARY*
1. The Separation of the Wicked from the Righteous- Verses 31-33
Here, Jesus said that He will come in His glory with all the angels. Then He will sit on His throne and all nations will gather before Him. They will be like the flock of a shepherd made up of sheep and goats mixed together. Then, like a shepherd, Jesus will sort out the people into two groups. One group will be the sheep, while the other group will be the goats. The sheep will be on His right hand whereas the goats will be on is left hand. The sheep will be the righteous and the goats will be the unrighteous or the wicked.
2. The Invitation of the King to the Righteous-verses 34-40
Jesus, the King, will then talk to the group on His right hand being the sheep. He will address them as blessed of His Father. He will then invite them to come and inherit the kingdom prepared for them from the beginning of the world.
Jesus goes on to give reasons why these group of people are blessed and what the members did. He said that they fed Him when He was hungry, they gave Him water when He was thirsty, they received Him as a stranger, they clothed Him when naked, they visited Him when He was sick and in prison.
The righteous will wonder when they did all these and He will tell them that they did it to Him when they did it to those belonging to Him.
3. The Judgement of the Wicked- verses 41-46
After this, Jesus will then turn to those on His left hand and address them. He will promise them as cursed and tell them to go away from Him into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Why, because they did not take care of Jesus like the people on His right hand.
The wicked will now wonder when they saw Jesus in those situations and refused to help Him. He will declare that since they did not do it to those who belong to Him, they did not do it to Him.
And then, those people will go away into everlasting punishment in hell fire. The righteous on the other hand will go into eternal life.
*APPLICATION*
A very powerful king ruled a certain village. While returning home from somewhere, he fell into the hands of the soldiers of the chief of a rival village. They took him as a prisoner. It took three months to negotiate the conditions for his release.
While away, the chief’s village was torn into two rival parties. One group was against him and insisted that a new chief be appointed to take his place. The other group was loyal to him and opposed the idea of replacing him. When the chief returned home, he met a divided village. He decided to be sure of those on his side and those against him. Using the village lot casting he had done that, he then decided with his council of elders what punishment to give to the bad citizens.
It is in the same way that our Lord Jesus will separate good people from bad people. And in order not to be classed as bad, we should try to do our Christian duty now- loving and caring for others. We should visit the sick, feed the hungry. And clothe the naked. And it is not wrong to give out some of our used clothing to people who may need them, whether in our compound, school, or church. This is an important part of the gospel. Let us remember that Jesus based His judgement on such outward works of love and compassion done to those belonging to Christ and those who are suffering.
